5 Natural Hair Myths
Hey guys!!!!!
I know that it has been a really long time since my last
blog post. Now that we are approaching the fall season, I wanted to talk about
some topics that will really help you avoid damaging your hair without even realizing
it.
There are a lot natural hair tips that are spreading like
wildfire online. Many instructional
videos and articles may have good intentions but can really be misleading. Some online tips can actually cause a person
to damage their hair in the long run.
Here are the top 5 natural hair myths that have been circulating
online.
1. You cannot possibly moisturize your hair too
much because natural hair needs all of the moisture that it can get... right?
WRONG. Your natural hair does need extra
moisture but it is definitely possible to over-moisturize your hair. If you
constantly add moisture without balancing your moisture levels with protein,
your hair will eventually get too soft. It will feel like soft cotton when wet.
When the hair is in this state, it will eventually break off because it is holding
too much moisture.
To add the proper amount of moisture, start
by moisturizing once a day and then increase to 2 times a day if necessary. If
your hair feels too moisturized, decrease to every other day.

2. You don’t have to comb your hair. Detangling
your hair is enough. This will prevent breakage from occurring.
FALSE. I have seen many YouTube videos instructing
people to detangle their natural hair in the shower and to only finger comb to
avoid breakage. This is far from the truth. I do believe in detangling natural
hair in the shower while saturated with deep conditioner. I also believe that a
person should actually comb their hair (with a very large tooth comb) to remove
the hair that has shed. If you don’t remove the shed hair, it will cause major
tangles and breakage in the long run. Hair tends to shed between 70-100 strands
a day and this shed hair needs to be removed to avoid major issues later.
3. You don’t need protein ever. Why would I? I’m
natural.
FALSE. I probably see this one the most. Just remember that your hair is made of protein
and over time as the hair strand gets older, it becomes more porous along the
hair ends. Porous hair tends to break because it is weaker. This is one of the
reasons why older hair breaks on the end. Protein is needed to fill in the
porous gaps and strengthen the hair.

You must stay away from shampoo and cowash only so
that your hair will not dry out.
FALSE. While I definitely believe in
cowashing, I believe that it should only be done in between shampoo sessions. Conditioners
will not adequately clean the hair. With a buildup of conditioner on the hair, it will
prevent moisture from entering the strand. The buildup must be removed so that
moisture can adequately enter each hair strand when you moisturize.
5
. You can color your hair without damage.
FALSE. Since your hair is 100% natural is can
withstand more abuse however, coloring your natural can still cause damage if
done incorrectly. Coloring the hair (or any chemical process) will increase
porosity along the hair strand leading to breakage. Be sure to take extra care
of your hair if it is colored and be sure to increase the use of protein in
your regimen to prevent breakage.

Hair

At least 8 glasses a day will properly keep you hydrated. Fruit juices and
sodas are not the best options to hydrate the body because they are loaded with
sugar which can cause inflammation. Inflammation can actually impede healthy
hair growth. If you are not a water drinker,
try infusing it with fruit. Adding lemons, strawberries and even cucumbers to
your water will add vitamins and enhance the flavor as well.

Eat a
protein rich diet. Hair consists of keratin which is a protein
made of amino acids. Your body must produce or ingest these amino acids in order
to grow healthy hair. Diets that are extremely low in amino acid proteins will
result in hair that is weak and fragile. High protein sources include eggs,
dairy and meat. You can also get your protein from non-animal sources. See next
tip.

Vegetarianism
and protein intake. If you love eating plant based, you can still
ingest healthy levels of protein. You can incorporate protein shakes or protein
bars into your diet to boost your protein levels. Healthy proteins are also available in many
veggies including broccoli as well as legumes and brown rice. With a little research
and meal planning, ingesting adequate amounts of plant based protein is not
necessarily a difficult job.

A lack of
protein can be problematic when it comes to healthy hair growth. If you
are not getting enough protein in your diet, hair growth will be stunted
because your body will naturally ration the protein and use it for other (more
important) life sustaining metabolic activities. Your body will try to hold on
to the protein and the hair will be the last recipient of the distributed
protein. Hair loss may begin to occur
within two to three months after your protein intake has dropped
significantly.
7.
Vitamins
B7, C and E Rock! Eat a diet high in vitamin B7 (encourages
growth and helps to reduce hair loss), Vitamin C (helps to grow and strengthen
hair) & Vitamin E (encourages sebum production for a healthy scalp). Stock
up on your fruits, veggies, nuts and healthy meats (or other high protein

Vitamin A
is great for your hair but too much vitamin A may be problematic. When
taking supplements, remember that more doesn’t always mean better. This is
especially true for the fat soluble vitamins A,D,E and K. Fat soluble vitamins
are stored in the body for longer periods of time and can pose a greater risk
for toxicity when consumed in excess. Taking too much Vitamin A may contribute
to hair loss according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Vitamin A is fat
soluble and your body will store any excess that you take in. This can result
in toxicity resulting in hair loss. Make sure that you are not taking more than
the recommended daily allowance. The
Daily Value for vitamin A is 5,000 International Units (IU) per day for adults.

A.P.I E. of Hair Care.
In nursing school, I
learned the acronym A.P.I.E to problem solve. The same acronym can be used to
solve hair issues.A- ASSESSMENT, P-PLANNING, I-IMPLEMENTATION
and E-EVALUATION. This process is used in the health care field when dealing
with health issues but it can also be utilized to solve hair issues.
Assessment: First you have to know what your specific hair issue is. Is your hair too dry, too soft, breaking or experiencing slow growth? The first step is identifying what the problem is.
Planning: Educate yourself on what the issues are and how to solve those issues. Develop a plan to get your hair healthy again. Your strategy may consist of things like deep conditioning your hair weekly, moisturizing twice a day, protective styling and /or trimming as needed. It is important to write down your plan so that you will easily be able to recall what you are going to implement.
Implementation: Work your plan. This can be the hard part so it is very important to stay consistent and dedicated. Some people may be super enthusiastic in the beginning but as time goes by, the enthusiasm may diminish. Because it this, I recommend that you take hair pictures monthly. This way you will be able to see your progress. Pictures don’t lie. This will keep your motivation going and inspire you to keep moving forward.
Evaluation: This should be done after roughly 2-3 months. This is the time that you evaluate your plan. Is your plan working? Is your hair progressing as expected? Does you plan need to be slightly changed? This is the moment when you decide if you are on the right road or if you need to revise your plan. If revision is necessary, it’s all good! Just move forward with a slightly different plan.

Did you know that you can ‘over moisturize’ your hair? Many people don’t know this fact. Over moisturized hair can lead to breakage. Be sure that your hair is properly balanced with moisture and protein. This will greatly reduce breakage. Read on……..
1. Retention is the goal. If your goal is to retain length, realize that unbalanced hair riddled with split ends will break just as fast as it grows. This is the reason many people will say “My hair will not grow”. This is so far from the truth. Hair will continuously grow from the scalp daily but if the hair is breaking at the same rate that it is growing, the hair will appear not to have grown at all. In actuality, length is not being retained. There is a continuous cycle of growth and breakage that is occurring. This cycle will never end unless you become aware and stop the breakage. The goal is to let those inches add up by keeping the hair balanced with moisture and protein. Healthy ends will not break.
2. This is MAJOR! Maintain a great moisture and protein balance in the hair to prevent breakage. As mentioned previously, too much moisture will cause the hair to be very soft and will cause breakage. Using too much protein in your regimen will cause the hair to become very hard and brittle. This will also lead to breakage. Keeping a balance is very important to prevent breakage and promote length retention.
3. How do you know which one your hair needs? I get a lot of questions about how to get started with maintaining a great moisture /protein balance. How do you know which one your hair needs? After washing and deep conditioning your hair, look at a shed hair strand. Lightly pull the strand of hair. If your hair is spongy or gummy when it is wet, more protein is needed. If (when wet) it breaks right away when you pull (without elasticity) you need more moisture. If your hair is deficient of protein, I would suggest that you start your regimen with a protein treatment for the first couple of weeks. If your hair is moisture deficient, start with a moisturizing deep treatment. Just listen to your hair and it will tell you what it needs.

5. Elasticity. What is it all about? A great measure of healthy hair is normal elasticity. Hair elasticity measures how much the hair will stretch and return to a normal state. Hair in great shape will stretch 20%- 50% of its original length. It will then return to its normal shape. This occurs without breaking. If breakage occurs, the elasticity is low. Balancing the moisture and protein levels will help you to maintain healthy elasticity.
6. Porous hair. What exactly is it? Typically, overly porous hair is caused by chemical treatments, heat damage and over manipulation of the hair. Porosity varies from person to person. Hey guys! In this blog post I will discuss
exercise, natural hair and hair growth.
Exercise is very important when it comes to
promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss. Many people overlook the
correlation between exercise and healthy hair growth. I will discuss how
important this correlation really is. I
will also discuss how to manage our hair while exercising so that we won’t let
our hairstyles prevent us from being active and healthy.
Exercise and hair growth. Are you hitting
the gym to lose weight or just to get a lot healthier? This is awesome but did
you know that exercise may increase hair growth rates? Many people who exercise
on a regular basis may experience faster hair growth which is an amazing benefit. This happens because exercising increases
blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles. The added blood flow provides much
needed nutrients and oxygen to the hair root causing faster hair growth.
1. Hairstyles and Exercising. So you go to the hair salon and get that
super cute silk press and Lord knows that you don’t wanna sweat it out! You
decide to take a few weeks off from your workouts so that you can be sure to
get your money’s worth. Decisions …Decisions!!! If you are sincerely dedicated
to living a healthy lifestyle, you can definitely look cute and wear hairstyles
conducive to that healthy lifestyle. We
shouldn’t let our hair prevent us from exercising and being in optimal health.
There are many hairstyles that we can wear while keeping up with our fitness
goals. Buns, braids, two strand twists and a wide array of protective styles can
be worn while exercising. We can definitely
get our workout in and still look super cute.
Sooooo…….what do you do with that super cute silk press? Try putting
your hair in a tight bun with a cute headband. Wait until your hair totally
dries to remove the bun and try pin curling it that night for heatless bouncy
curls the next day. This really works J.

2. Sweaty hair issues! If you are working out
regularly and sweat profusely, you may need to cleanse your hair in between
workouts. If this is the case for you, try co-washing during the week as needed.
As mentioned previously, co-washing is rinsing your hair with water and
conditioner. If you shampoo and deep condition weekly and you are working out
daily, you may want to co-wash your hair 1-2 times during the week to rinse out
the sweat, salt and any buildup that may be present. This will keep your hair
and scalp very healthy. It is totally not necessary to shampoo after each and
every workout. This will cause dryness which is what you definitely want to

3. Try oil rinses. This is another option for those
who exercise daily. The method is super easy.

to your hair and scalp. Massage and rinse. Your hair will be very soft and well
lubricated. This is one of my favorite
ways to refresh my hair after a workout.

4. Swimming and hair damage. If possible, it is best to seek out a salt
water pool because it is chlorine free which is healthier for your hair and
body. If this is not an option, be sure to protect your hair while swimming in
a chlorinated pool. Chlorine can be very
damaging to the hair and can cause breakage and severe damage. If you protect your hair, you can easily
avoid the damage and breakage that chlorine can bring. A great way to protect
the hair while swimming is to wet your hair first and then apply oil to the
hair before placing on the swim cap. Just think of the hair as being a sponge.
If you place a dry sponge in the pool, it will absorb a lot of chlorine. If the
sponge is already wet before placing it in the pool, it will absorb very little
chlorine. Wetting your hair is like
placing a wet sponge in the pool. Minimal chlorine will be absorbed and applying
oil will further protect the strands. I swim almost weekly and this is the
method that I personally use to prevent damage. This method works like a charm
and I have not experienced any breakage.

Proper cleansing after swimming. After
swimming, be sure to cleanse your hair appropriately to be sure that the
chlorine is removed. This is extremely important because you do not want for
the chlorine to be left in your hair. This will definitely cause breakage. If

absorption should be minimal. The small amount of chlorine left should be
easily removed.
